Michael Payne

Drawing, for me, is an end in itself, not a preliminary for another endeavor.  The spontaneity and pressure of working with the live model suit my personality.  My work focuses on the human form.  The expressive and evocative qualities of the figure are most evident in art and the dance.  One of my goals is to represent these qualities.  The nude in art is timeless.  It can represent the mythical aspects of the human psyche and the elemental aspects of nature, a metaphor of the human condition.

I wish to remain true to the figure, and my work is essentially realistic.  At the same time, however, another goal is to simplify the forms and volumes of the figure to capture the abstract repetition and rhythm they create.  I also hope to convey the mass and monumentality of the human form as living sculpture.
