Pam Ohnemus
I was born in Ashcroft, British Columbia,
Canada in 1958. We moved
around a lot between
Canada
and the
United States
when I was growing up. We
finally settled in
Marshalltown
,
Iowa
because of the rich soil. I
have always enjoyed drawing and painting, even when I was young.
My sister and I did artwork whenever we could.
Before I graduated in 1976 from
Marshalltown
High School
, I took as many art classes as I could.
I went on to the
University
of
Northern Iowa
, where I received my BA in art education with
an
emphasis in drawing and painting.
I received a two year free tuition art scholarship my last
two years. I was married
in 1980 to James M. Ohnemus, which brought me to
Davenport
,
Iowa
, and we have lived here since.
We have two children: Philip, born in 1984, and Beth, born in
1986. I got a job
teaching art for Davenport Schools in 1980 where I taught at the
alternative high schools. I
am presently teaching art at Williams Intermediate.
I received my Master’s from
Western
Illinois
University
in 1998. I became a
naturalized citizen in 1999. I
have traveled to
France
,
England
,
Ireland
,
Egypt
and many places in
North America
, which has inspired my artwork.
Our
natural environment is a powerful focus of my artwork.
At present I am painting a series on the Midwest prairies.
Through my work, I promote prairie appreciation and
preservation.
