THE BIG READ

The Big Read/Let’s All Read selected book for our region is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Listed below are various events, time and locations for different Big Read programs. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.  Additional funding support for The Big Read is provided by the Moline Foundation with matching funds from the W.K. Library Card Sign-Up Drive

 

Copies of To Kill a Mockingbird will be distributed to individuals who sign up for a library card at area libraries while supplies last.

Big Read Kickoff!! Banned Books Reading
Quad City Arts Center, 1715 2nd Ave., Rock Island, IL 61201


The Big Read in the Quad Cities will officially get underway and kick off Banned Books Week as local writers, artists, teachers, musicians, and performers read from their favorite banned or contested books, such as To Kill a Mockingbird. Each reader will introduce his/her book and then read a selection. Quad City Arts Literary Arts Administrator and poet Ryan Collins will host. Free and open to the public. Part of Quad City Arts Free Friday Series.

Screening of the classic film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, starring Gregory Peck.

 

Thursday, October 11, 6pm

Discussion and Mock Trial

Rogalski Center, St. Ambrose University, 518 W. Locust St., Davenport, IA 52803

 

Discussion of the “Trial of Tom Robinson vs. Mayella Ewell” in To Kill a Mockingbird. Followed by a Practice Trial of the St. Ambrose University Mock Trial Team arguing a trial with similar social/racial overtones and relevance.

Screening of Infamous starring Sandra Bullock as Harper Lee.

Mary Badham Residency
Adler Theater, 136 E. 3rd St., Davenport, IA 52801

Mary Badham (Best Actress Oscar nominee for her role as Scout) will be speaking at two screenings of To Kill a Mockingbird, one in the morning for local middle and high school students and one in the evening that is free and open to the public. She will speak for about 10 minutes after each screening and then take questions from the audience.

Charles Shields Residency

Charles Shields will conduct a three-day residency, talking to various schools and community groups about his biography of Harper Lee Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee.

Screening of Capote, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman (who won Best Actor Academy Award for his performance) as Truman Capote, and Catherine Keener as Harper Lee. Harper Lee biographer Charles Shields will introduce the film and lead a discussion about the relationship between Harper Lee and Truman Capote after the film.
