Quad
City
Arts regranted $36,320 to 20
outstanding community arts projects in 2007.

85 artists will be paid as a result of these
programs with hundreds of $1000’s returned to
the local economy in the form of purchases,
rentals and services. Of the $36,320 to be
regranted, 81% will be used for programming
with underserved populations, and all of the

2007 Arts Dollar$ Award Recipients

ERICA ATTWOOD:
Awarded $2000 for the project BRINGING THE THREE
LITTLE PIGS TO LIFE FOR 1500 AREA STUDENTS
. She
will produce a professional ballet/opera production of
The Three Little Pigs
, the libretto of which emphasizes
the importance of literacy and library resources. The
performers will organize enrichment workshops in local
schools and a free performance at the Capitol Theatre.

BARBARA BIANCHI:
Awarded $2000 for project TO CREATE NEW WORKS 
FOR EXHIBITS IN 2007
.
The grant will support the 
creation of six new mixed media pieces for scheduled 
exhibitions. There will be two work-in-progress 
presentations at Clinton High School.

DORIAN BYRD:
Awarded $820 for the project DANCING STORIES, which
will be performed by Dorian and a student member of
Imani! Dancers at local libraries, community centers,
and/or after school programs. The stories will be taken
from children’s books about dancing. Five interactive
performances will take place, each incorporating
storytelling, dance, and music.

JOEL FRANKEN:
Awarded $2000 for the project RESCULPTING THE
RIVER
.
He will produce an educational program for and
about the existing project “The Mississippi Palette.”
The program will include a DVD about the Mississippi
Palette project, DVD documentation of the project, and
accompanying lesson plans for use in K-12 classrooms.
 It will be facilitated by Joel Franken , Bill Wohlford , Judy
Gray, Ralph Iaccarino, and others.

OLENKA GADZIK:
Awarded $2000 for the project FLAMENCO
FUNDAMENTALS
.
She will create a flamenco class for
beginning adult dancers and classical guitar
accompanist, Lars Rehnberg. Public workshops will
demonstrate the class’ progress leading up to a final
performance.

JUDY O. GRAY:
Awarded $2000 for the project CASI MOSAIC GARDEN
SCULPTURE
.
In this class for seniors through the
Center for Active Seniors, Inc. Judy will teach elements
of art and design. The final product will be a collaborative
mosaic for permanent installation.

SHELLIE MOORE GUY:
Awarded $2000 for the project HEALING WATERS FOR
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
.
She will produce an anthology of
poetry, stories, and artwork produced by and about
survivors of domestic violence.

MELISSA MCBAIN:
Awarded $2000 for the QUAD CITY PLAYWRIGHTS
FESTIVAL 2007
.
She will produce the work of playwriting
contest winners in five categories. The festival will take
place in Wallenberg Hall (Augustana campus) and
feature Augustana students as actors and directors.

CASI, CENTER FOR ACTIVE SENIORS, INC:
Awarded $2000. Their program, CASI AND THE VISUAL
ARTS: Expansion of CASI’s Visual Arts Program
will add
opportunities in drama, digital photography, gardening,
art studios, poetry, scrapbooking, and storytelling to
CASI’s existing arts programming. Programming is
overseen by Artist in Residence Judy O. Gray.

DENKMANN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:
Awarded $2000 for the program HORSES, HOUSES,
HILLTOPS, AND HOLLYHOCKS: Visions of the

Southwest
. Students will use interdisciplinary resources
to create artwork inspired by the southwest. Completed
artwork will be on display at various locations in the
school’s neighborhood. Classes will be taught primarily
by Gloria Burlingame, with Linda Pfaff assisting as
needed.

GENERATIONS AGENCY ON AGING:
Awarded $2000 to produce CONCERTS FOR ELDERS
2007
.
The concerts will be twelve free, 45-minute
sing-along performances by Olenka Gadzik , featuring
standards from the 1940’s as well as “Euro-fringe”
melodies. The performances will take place at various
GenAge Cafés from May through August.

J.B. YOUNG INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL:
Awarded $2000 for the program DISCOVERING A
SENSE OF PLACE THROUGH THE ARTS
. Students at
J.B. Young will create public art installations using
mosaic techniques with artist Kunhild Blacklock. The
project will conclude with a reception celebrating the
installation’s completion.

LINCOLN ACADEMY OF THE INTEGRATED ARTS:
Awarded
$2000 for a EULENSPIEGEL PUPPET
THEATRE RESIDENCY
.
The residency will be facilitated
by Eulenspiegel artist Monica Leo and will include
puppet making workshops with second grade students,
all-school assemblies featuring Eulenspiegel
performances, and an evening performance open to
the public. The unit will focus on storytelling as a theme.
This project will be an extension of an existing
relationship between Lincoln Academy and
Eulenspiegel.

LINKS, Inc.:
Awarded $1800 for the program DANCING WITH OUR
FUTURE STARS
.
The program will be a two week
summer day camp for selected children involved at
the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. The
children will be bussed daily to Imani! Dance studio
to work with dancer Dorian Byrd to learn about and
perform modern dance, culminating in the performance
of an Anansi play.

LONGFELLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:
Awarded
$2000 for the program INTEGRATING ART
CLASSES IN AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
.
Art classes
focusing on African masks and folk tales will be taught
by artists Andi Naab and Heike Ehlers with the
assistance of classroom teachers and volunteers. An
art show at the end of the semester will showcase
student work.

MIDWEST WRITING CENTER:
Awarded
$800 for the program I WANT TO BE AN
AUTHOR
.
Writer Julie Jensen McDonald will conduct
a creative writing workshop for fourth through sixth
graders which will include two instructional sessions
in which students will write their own short story,
and one celebratory session to launch the collection
of their creations. Each student will receive a copy
of the short story collection.

OPEN CITIES CINEMA:
Awarded
$2000 to produce a JOHN BLOOM DVD
AND TEACHER’S GUIDE
.
Art teachers Linda Burau
and Jennifer Lanphere will lead four workshops in
art education methodology for 100 art educators,
who will receive a free copy of the John Bloom DVD
and teacher’s guide. An accompanying curriculum
will be available on the organization’s website.

ROCK ISLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY:
Awarded $2000 to produce CHILDREN’S ROOM
MURALS
.
Children in the Rock Island/Milan school
district will be recruited to participate in a summer
project to paint two murals on the walls of the newly
remodeled children’s room in the Rock Island Public
Library. The project will take place during the
summer reading program and will be facilitated by
Gloria Burlingame.

SCHUETZENPARK GILDE:
Awarded
$900 to produce SECOND SUNDAYS IN
SCHUETZEN
PARK
. The program will be a
concert series taking place on the second
Sunday of each month from June through
September. The participating groups are four
small ensembles: Olde Towne Circus Band,
Windjammers Dixieland Band, Ambassadors
Orchestra, and Deutsche Polka Band. They will
be performing everything from Polka to Jazz
during the series.

THURGOOD MARSHALL LEARNING CENTER:
Awarded $2000 to produce WEST END STORY: A Day
at Thurgood Marshall, the Musical
.
The program will
be an after school creative writing and drama class
which will include attending local theatre productions,
developing writing skills, and writing and producing a
musical collage loosely based on the lives of Thurgood
Marshall students. The group will work with educator/
director Angela Rathman, theatre troupe The Prenzie
Players, and blues musician Hal Reed.
