THE WORD presented by Quad City Arts and the Midwest Writing Center

THE WORD is a poetry reading/workshop series designed to showcase some of the best new talent in contemporary American poetry in a setting that allows for maximum engagement and understanding between audience and poet.

THE WORD
at Quad City Arts makes a return on Friday, February 15th at 7:00 p.m. here in the Quad City Arts Center. Being the day after Valentine's Day, we thought, "rather than have just one featured reader, why not have an event featuring several poets and "love" poems - all kinds of "love" poems?" We couldn't think of any reason not to, so that's what we'll be doing:

Local & not-so local poets will read their own work as well as some of their favorite (& your favorite) love poems. Sweets will be on hand, as will other refreshments, and after the readings conversations will follow, "& love will fill the air!" So, bring your sweetheart and check out this special "love" edition of
THE WORD!

THE WORD is brought to you by, Quad City Arts Center as part of Quad City Arts Free Friday Series. This event is FREE and open to the public.

If you have any questions about THE WORD, please contact Ryan Collins at (309) 793-1213, ext. 107 or e-mail him at rcollins@quadcityarts.com.

THE BIG READ

This year, the Quad City Arts Let’s All Read campaign has gotten bigger and better, as it is now part of The Big Read. The Big Read is a initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

The Big Read/Let’s All Read To Kill a Mockingbird was a huge success in the Quad City Area. We had dozens of events attended by thousands of people of all ages, and we hope that we have helped to make reading a more important part in their lives and in the lives of everyone in the QC area.  We would like to thank all the people, organizations, media outlets, etc. that helped make this event a success:

The Argus/Dispatch
Paul Ziebarth and Barnes & Noble at Northpark Mall
the Bettendorf Public Library
Jeff Bilyeu and KWQC
The Midwest Writing Center
Moline Public Library
Ted Priester and Open Cities Cinema
Quad City Radio Group
Quad City Times
River Cities’ Reader
Rick Palmer, Steve Rudin, Laura Rodriguez and all the staff at the RiverCenter/The Adler Theatre
Michael Hustedde, the St. Ambrose Mock Trial Team and St. Ambrose University
Kathryn White and United Township High School
All the other schools, teachers, students and administrators who participated in The Big Read.

Thank you!!!
Thanks again to everyone for your participation and your love for reading— may it continue to grow throughout your lives.

We also want to extend a very special thank you to Angela Campbell and our lead partner in bringing The Big Read to the Quad Cities, the Davenport Public Library (Main & Fairmount branches)— without Angela’s hard work and dedication to revitalizing reading as an essential part of culture (both locally and nationally), this program would not have been possible.  Thank you so much again to everyone & keep on reading!!!

 POETRY OUT LOUD

For the first time in the Quad Cities, we are happy to bring you the Poetry Out Loud National Poetry Recitation Contest, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation and our state partner the Illinois Arts Council.  By encouraging high school students to memorize and perform great poems, Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class. This exciting new program, which began in 2005, helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary heritage.

On Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008 , 7:00 p.m. school and classroom winners from around the Illinois Quad Cities will meet in the regional contest here at the Quad City ArtsCenter.  Students will have to memorize and recite three poems, which judges will score on a variety of criteria, such as accuracy, evidence of understanding, pronunciation and voice inflection.  The regional contest winner will then move on to the state competition in Springfield, and hopefully move on from there to the national final (last year, the state contest winner placed in the top 12 nationally, and we’re hoping the winner from our region will do as well or better!).  So please come and watch the Quad Cities’ first ever Poetry Out Loud regional contest and support our students as they compete for over $100,000 in scholarships and prizes for both themselves and their schools!

For more information about Poetry Out Loud, visit their website: www.poetryoutloud.org
