ART AT THE AIRPORT
A Portrait of Remarkable women
SEPTEMBER 2 - OCTOBER 31
Held in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which guarantees and protects women's constitutional right to vote, A Portrait of Remarkable Women serves as the latest exhibition at the Quad City Arts International Airport Gallery, its display from September 2 through October 31 celebrating a milestone of democracy and the achievements of women, especially in the arts. The airport gallery's new exhibit features portraits painted by Davenport's Heidi Hernandez and Cecile Houel of Fort Madison, Iowa, as well as sculptures by 11 female artists living within a 250-mile radius.
Cecile HouelConvinced that art can contribute to world peace, internationally recognized artist Cecile Houel started the “Nobel Peace Prize Collection: Peace Starts Within” in 2014, to celebrate all of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates of the prestigious Nobel Foundation since 1901.
Dividing her time between Iowa and France, she paints very personalized, large portraits of the famous laureates to honor their will and dedication to make a better world with strength, courage, and creativity. Each figure, internationally acclaimed, or subject to controversy, brought their light and contributed to humanity’s evolution. As part of this special exhibit commemorating women, Houel will exhibit six female Nobel Peace Prize Winners at the airport gallery. |

This collection of portrait paintings explores the experiences of working female artists. I wondered: What challenges had these artists faced in their field? In everyday life? Did their experience prove it is more difficult for a woman to succeed as an artist?
This collection of portrait paintings salutes Feminism. The word itself holds power and mystique. A dirty word to some, a call to solidarity for others. Feminism: a feeling of power and pride in gender identity- the power of being Female. The collection of portraits I paint capture an exterior, a facade, judged unfairly based on stereotypes and bias. The portraits are monochromatic with subtle, desaturated color schemes. I Invite the viewer to take a closer look and inquire. These women are strong and established in their fields. Despite roles and expectations imposed on them from the moment they were born, these females continue to achieve. |
