2025 HARLEY AWARD WINNER
Carolyn Krueger
Carolyn Krueger grew up in Rock Island and studied art at Augustana College. She started volunteering for art events like Riverssance and the Great Mask Auctions when she was as young as 13. MidCoast Fine Arts provided this teenager with a way to engage and be inspired by other local artists.
In 2009 at the age of 24, Carolyn opened her first gallery with the encouragement of Dean Schroeder. The ARTery quickly became home to over 45 local artists, staffed by volunteers with commission-free sales. The partnership between The ARTery and MidCoast made it possible for her to open The ARTery at Bucktown just a year later with another 20 local artists being able to show and sell their work.
While running these two galleries, she was also coordinating events like Deadstock, organizing volunteers for Riverssance, managing multiple galleries & Gallery HOP for MidCoast, all while teaching part time at the Family Museum and Blackhawk College. She also was proud to serve as the Art Curator for a few years for Venus Envy Quad Cities, an organization dedicated to empowering women through the arts. Venus Envy was another one of those events where you would find a teenage Carolyn volunteering just to be a part of an amazing thing.
Teaching pottery gradually became a priority and a passion. A life-long love of clay and education motivated Carolyn to find a teaching studio of her own. A shared studio-space in Davenport gave her that opportunity for seven years, but there was always the desire to carve out her own place.
When our community lost MidCoast Fine Arts, and our world was blind-sided by Covid, The ARTery & Gallery West in Downtown Rock Island closed in March of 2020. The search for a new gallery and studio space started in 2021 with new business partners and new goals.
The ARTery re-opened in Rock Island in August 2023. A smaller gallery space still accommodates over 20 artists in the former Bike & Hike building. Carolyn and her partners host regular free craft events, workshops, super fun receptions, and private pottery lessons.
Carolyn served on the Arts Commission for the City of Rock Island for over 16 years, she’s currently a member of the Rock Island Arts Guild, a governor on the Rock Island Community Foundation, and is an advocate for all things art in our community. She was proud to be honored with the title of Rock Island Citizen of the Year Artist in 2024. She has been teaching art and pottery for over twenty years and currently offers private pottery lessons and classes to students of all ages at The ARTery.
