2022 HARLEY AWARD WINNERPat Bradley BereskinPat Bradley Bereskin is a native of Bettendorf, Iowa. She acknowledges her sight and artistic ability as gifts from God. The direction and encouragement she received, from the art teachers in the Bettendorf public school, created a lifelong dream to share her gift.
|
In 1977, after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa, she entered the teaching profession and taught art to children in grades Pre-K through adult. For 15 years she and her family lived in Hinsdale, Illinois, where she studied with Caroline Lyford Catalano and Nina Weiss. In addition to creating and showing her own artwork in Chicago and the Midwest, she has been teaching art in the Quad Cities for 31 years.
As an “Artists in Residence” for the community school district, she works with art educators and brings in contemporary artists to inspire students. She serves as an educator for the special needs community artists.
Besides spending the summer teaching Art Camps and seminars, Pat has been studying in Italy each summer for the past 16 years. In 2013, she opened her first gallery in Davenport, first as Atom Gallery and then branding as Bereskin Gallery & Art Academy. Five years ago, the gallery moved to an 8,000 sq. ft. building in downtown Bettendorf. An expansion that allowed her to move the
academy classes and studio space under one roof, creating a unique experience by allowing guests to view the regional artworks and experience artists creating before their eyes. Each month a Midwestern artist, or two, has been featured and exhibited. In August 2022, the gallery moved online to www.bereskinartgallery.com.
The Art Academy has grown in numbers and reputation for providing excellence in art education in the Quad Cities. The beginning level classes (Pre-K through 4th grade) have been moved to the Family Museum in Bettendorf under the guidance of Alexandria Medenciy and Hannah Weickhorst. The more advanced (students 4th grade through 12th grade & adult) moved to the Figge Art Museum in Davenport with 14 teachers in total. Bereskin continues to teach at the year-round Art Academy program at the Figge.
Teachers are now being mentored in Bereskin’s wholistic methods, and it is in her legacy that those seeking to grow their artistic skills will be provided for long after she is gone.
