Art at the Airport

Showcasing cultural vibrancy of our community
to the nearly one million visitors every year.
ART AT THE AIRPORT

ELISA BOUGHNER, LUCA CRUZAT,
& LORI RODERICK

November 3, 2021 - January 3, 2022

Quad City Arts’ Art at the Airport presents oil paintings by Elisa Boughner of Glenview, IL, collagraphs by Luca Cruzat of Carbondale, IL, and ceramic sculpture by Lori Roderick of Rock Island, IL.

Elisa Boughner
Oil Paintings

Elisa Boughner was born in the United States, raised in Mexico and studied art in America and Europe. Her work reflects the influence of each of these cultures. She says, “Color holds an emotional bond for the viewer and the artist alike. My work is about emotion, and I believe color and composition can create an undeniable joyful emotion when looking at it.” Her still lifes are Expressionist in style, but incorporate the bright color palette characteristic of Mexican painting.

Luca Cruzat
Collagraphs

Luca Cruzat is an artist and educator based in Southern Illinois. She received her MFA in Printmaking from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Her work comes from close, personal observation and engagement with the ordinary. Cruzat states “an unknown mother kept a daughter’s garments in a box. This found material inspired these prints. The result is a fragmented portrait of a woman that is and becomes at the same time. The garment itself intends to transmute past into present. Reflecting on my own process of growing up, from time to time I come back to the box to generate another work, as an unfinished process.”

LORI RODERICK
CERAMIC Sculpture

The vessels in this exhibit were created as a reaction to and/or escape from the global pandemic. Some are light and hopeful; some are darker reflecting the many moods we all have experienced in the last 18 months. They are made using the very simple and old hand building techniques of pinching and coiling. Coils of terracotta (low fire) clay are added to each other, building each hollow piece from the bottom up. During and after the building process, they are paddled, carved or otherwise manipulated by hand until they have their final shape and surface. Finally, they are glazed and fired several times until they have the depth of color you see hear.

Some of the pieces share whimsical abstract imagery that’s not quite flora or fauna and mostly made up the moment I pick up a tool or brush in the studio. There is one exception in the exhibit  - a piece full of line drawings of women. “Girlfriends” was made to honor all the women friend networks out there. In the midst of political, personal and global upheaval for so many, this celebrates women friends everywhere who support each other in good times and in crisis.
I received a Bachelor of Arts in English and Art from Augustana College and a Masters of Fine Arts in ceramics and sculpture from the University of Iowa. I exhibited work regularly before moving into part-time teaching, then full time arts management, and for the last 14 years, higher education grant writing and fundraising.

I am happy to be back at the stage of life where there is time in the margins to create and put some art out into a world that desperate for joy and healing.
