SECOND AVENUE WINDOW AT QUAD CITY ARTS' ROCK ISLAND GALLERY
DECEMBER 7, 2020 - JANUARY 30, 2021
Mark W. Schwiebert
The artist Mark W. Schwiebert has had a lifelong interest in the expressive power of art. Since studying watercolor painting at the Davenport Museum of Art in the mid-1970s, he has pursued both watercolors and oil painting, working with a variety of subjects and methods. In oils, he concentrates primarily on landscapes, favoring cloudscapes that powerfully evoke the drama and majesty of a setting.
In his watercolor paintings, Mark focuses on portraits of humanity as well as paintings of landscapes and still life. In recent years, paintings have been inspired by the various venues he and his wife, Deborah, have visited. In this exhibit are several works derived from travels to South Africa, China, Sweden, and South America.
In his artwork, Mark’s goal is to express the spirit of a moment or to convey some of the wonder or character of the subject. As put in the words of a poet: to capture “the sense of a moment, or setting that is there; to be frozen in space, an amber of thought; to inspire, refresh, and, for the willing, be taught.”
The Artist enjoys the forcefulness of oil in capturing the drama of a scene, while valuing the lightness and expressiveness of watercolors in interpreting a landscape or human subject’s character.
It is hoped that this exhibit will arouse in viewers some of the wonder that the scenes and subjects portrayed inspired in the Artist.
