SUSMITA KUMAR

I was born in India (Bihar -the state where this art originated from). I grew up watching this kind of art in my family's and friends' houses, which has always fascinated me. The geometrical patterns, fine lines, and faces with huge eyes all caught my attention.
10 years ago, I moved to Illinois, though I was never taught how to do this art, I started creating small, simple paintings for my home. I got a lot of appreciation. Then, I moved forward to big and complex patterns. Now it’s my passion. I work on handmade and art paper with acrylic paint. My paintings are inspired by Indian mythology, nature, and life.

Madhubani Art is a style of Indian painting practiced in the Mithila region of the Indian subcontinent. In the past, this style of painting was done using different kinds of everyday materials: twigs, matchsticks, and fingers. It uses natural dyes and pigments on the walls to decorate houses. Nowadays, it’s done with pens, nib-pens, and brushes, different kinds of paint are used too, such as acrylic. Madhubani art can be done on paper, canvases, and fabric. Madhubani paintings are characterized by figures that are prominently outlined, like bulging fish-like eyes and pointed noses. The themes of Madhubani paintings usually include natural elements like animals, the sun, the moon, bamboo trees, flowers, and more.

The building, which was once a turn-of-the-century department store, features hardwood floors, and a  fourteen foot-high ceiling. The exhibition space is more than 1,500 sq. ft., a perfect space to showcase large paintings, sculptures and enjoy an occasional performance.
